General FAQ

Are you affiliated with a dive agency?

Print
Yes we are members of NAUI (national association of underwater instructors). NAUI gives us the flexibility to create our own higher standards and requirements than the local dive shops while still being supported by a world wide recognized training agency. Your certification will be issued through NAUI and is recognized and accepted worldwide at any diveshop.

Do I need to be in good shape to dive?

Print
YES! proper physical fitness is essential to an enjoyable diving experience just as it is for any other physical activity. For your entry level Scuba Diver certification you will be spending a lot of time in the water and using muscle groups you may of never used before. And you will need to pass a basic swim test prior to confined water work. On that note though being a star athlete is not required, we just ask that you come to class prepared and be in proper, healthy, physical condition. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Do you sell gear?

Print
Although we are not authorized retail dealers we do occasionaly offer special pricing to students on equipment from outside providers through our personal accounts. We also offer used equipment sales, so you can purchase the same exact equipment you used during your course. We are also more than happy to assist you in selecting the correct equipment for you and your style of diving regardless of where you decide to make your purchase.

How much time will it take to become certified?

Print
We prefer to look at quality vs speed when determining a classes pace. We have done classes in as little as one week to as long as 2 months. It greatly depends on your schedule and learning curve. Generally the academics take around 8-10 hours in a classroom environment and that is scheduled based off of your and our availability. Some homework depending on the course may also be assigned. You will be spending anywhere from 6-8 hours at minimum in the pool learning and refining your core skills. The 5 open water dives (4 SCUBA and 1 Skin Diving/Rescue Dive) will be done on two days. Usually SCUBA 1 and 2 along with Skin Diving/Rescue is completed on day one then the final SCUBA 3 and 4 are done on the last day. These can be back to back days or scheduled apart depending on your schedule. Please keep in mind that these are guidelines and may change during your course depending on class size and progression but do not feel any need to rush because our main goal is providing you with personalized quality education and we will often free of charge (to active students) provide extra tutoring if needed.

How old do I have to be and can my kids dive with me?

Print
Although the training agencies are dropping their minimum certification age to appeal to a wider range of prospective divers we still require the minimum age of 16 years old (course specific requirements can be found in the course section). However we do offer discover scuba sessions to anyone under the age of 16 or will be happy to refer you to another instructor or shop that provides junior certifications. Your children are more than welcome to accompany you during your certification, we will provide snorkling equipment for them to use in the pool and fun activities to keep them occupied during your open water dives.

I haven’t been diving in a while, what do I need to do to start diving again?

Print
If you are certified by any of the major agencies (PADI, NAUI, SSI, etc) you are certified for life. However it is recommeded after a break from diving of 6 months or more you take a refresher course. We can provide refresher courses on request whether it be it an academic refresher or open water refresher. Contact us for pricing.

What can I expect from your class?

Print
When you take a class from us we are going to train, teach, lead, and challenge you. The only limit to our class is what you put into it. We do not expect perfection but we do expect your best effort's. By the end of the class you will leave a safe, well rounded, educated diver. We feel you should not only be able to recite from your book, but truly understand the material. You will be able to not only demonstrate a skill you will be able to perform it in a real life situation..

What does ‘independent instructor’ mean?

Print
Being independent instructors means we are not affiliated with a specific local dive shop. We run our classes on our own schedule and find our own facilities. We also own and maintain our own stock of rental equipment

What gear do we need for class?

Print
All of the equipment that you will need for your course is provided by Submersion SCUBA. That includes booties, mask, fins, and exposure suit (which most shops require you to purchase before the start of class). We actually prefer that you do not purchase any equipment prior to the course so that you can try various brands and styles before spending your hard earned money on something that you may not need or could of gotten for a better price.

Where are classes held?

Print
We have multiple options for your training needs. We have a dedicated classroom at our home in Queen Creek, or we can come to your home or anywhere else that has a suitable classroom environment. We have done classes at parks, coffee shops, backyards, and more. For the confined water work we have a community pool by our house or we can use a pool of your choice as long as it is at least 8' deep and provides enough swimming room for the amount of students in the class. Open water checkout dives are done at Lake Pleasant but we can arrange an RV trip to California or Mexico for your dives, if you would prefer that option please let us know at the start of your class.

Where is your shop located?

Print
We don't have a storefront. We teach out of our home in Queen Creek, AZ.

Who else will be in my class with me?

Print
All of our classes are private or semi-private classes with a maximum class size of 4 students. If you sign up for a private class it will be a true one on one course. Our semi-private classes are also 'private' classes since they are closed to open enrollment unless the originator's of the course agree to the additional student prior to the start of the class. So if you and a friend sign up for a class and want it only to be the two then it is closed off. No additional students will be added to your class unless you approve. Also if you are on your own and want to take a class with someone else or meet someone new let us know, we always have singles that are looking for an open semi-private class to join.
